Admittedly, I’m a bit obsessed with all things online dating. I’m the social media manager for a worldwide online dating site, met my boyfriend of two years online and I truly think that online dating is the absolute best way to find love. However, not every email you receive online will make you swoon. At some point during your online dating adventure you will receive a message that makes you want to cry, laugh, delete your profile or write a scathing response back to the sender.

“Are you one of those girls who never responds to messages? You look like one. That’s rude, btw.” “I’d like to take you out, but if we bump into anyone I know I will have to say I met you at a club. Can’t let anyone know I’m online dating, feel me?” “I love your hands!!!!!!” “Lakers fans suck hard. CLIPPER NATION, BABY!” “Can you define successful?” “I’m looking for love. Are you looking for love? Is love looking for us? Let’s find out.” “Are you still fertile?

There are really only two options when figuring out how to handle weird messages-ignore or respond. Since most of these gentleman aren’t guys I’d like to get to know any further, there is no point in my responding. At the beginning of my online dating experience I would reply back to each odd message I got, but quickly learned that getting into an email exchange with some of these guys is not my idea of a good time. Laugh, delete and move on to the many guys who are worthy of a response.

The most important thing you need to have if you’re online dating isn’t a beautiful profile photo…it’s a sense of humor. When you get a particularly offensive message, remember that it’s from a guy sitting behind a computer screen who would probably never have the guts to approach you in real life.
